Delicious food!!!! Sat at the bar for happy hour and had excellent service. It wasn't super crowded for a Saturday night which was nice. Got our food quickly and loved the atmosphere. 10/10 recommend to anyone in the Colombia Heights area.

Heard a lot of great things about this place and def had to try in DC. We never had Laos food but quickly realized that it is kind of similar to Thai food. Ordered shrimp Kua Mee (4.5/5) tasted just like pad thai Ordered Khao Soi (3/5) with chicken. Loved the curry but not the noodle. It was over cooked and wasnt grabbing the curry well. Thai version of khao soi normally uses egg noodle which i think is better. Very casual ambiance and food came out fairly quickly. Def a must try when you come to DC!!

Thip Khao Review: Great Unique Laotian Food in the City Thip Khao offers great and unique Laotian food in the city. We had the Piing (Chicken Skewers Marinated and Grilled with Lemongrass, Ginger, Fermented Fish, Spicy Toasted Rice Sauce) and the Chuenh Paa Sa Moun Pai (Crispy Catfish with Spicy Fish Sauce, Lemongrass, Mint, Cilantro, and Fried Shallot). Both dishes were flavorful and beautifully prepared. The service was great, and they took really good care of us, helping with any questions on the menu. The atmosphere is elegant but casual, and the restaurant was pretty filled. If you're looking to try something different and delicious, Thip Khao is an excellent choice.

The food is top-notch here! We started with the siin haeng (pork jerky, $19) that was unbelievably tender and flavorful. It came with a savory peanut sauce and some refreshing cucumber slices. For main courses, we tried the kua mee (thin rice noodles, $23) with chicken, the chicken piing (lemongrass-marinated meat on a skewer, $22), and the kua khao jaew bong (chili fried rice, $23). All of these dishes were excellent - you cannot go wrong. The presentation is also great, each dish comes on what appears to be a woven plate, and the piing was served with a side of sticky rice in a fun-sized barrel. No chance to try dessert as we were so full! Maybe next time!

Food 10/10 Price 8/10 Service 9/10 Interior 8.8/10 + Nice Bathroom The food here is good, it was bustling and busy. I would say for DC it's fair price but relatively more expensive them i'm used too. The lady serving water was very attentive and sweet. Overall good and authentic food, i'll come back in the future as I didn't get the purple sticky rice with my pork.

It's our third night in DC and we picked another restaurant featured in the DC episode of Somebody Feed Phil for dinner this evening. It took us just 20 minutes to get there from the Smithsonian American Art Museum & National Portrait Gallery where we had spent the entire afternoon, involving only 1 line of Metro Rail ride. The restaurant is only 4 blocks north of the Columbia Heights station. We ordered: 1. Chuenh Peek Gai (crispy chicken wings) 2. Piing with pork shoulder 3. Gaeng Phet (noodle in red curry sauce) with fried tofu which same with a side of rice. My husband is very sentine to fish sauce and we don't like the flavour nor the aroma of it. He said he could taste fish sauce in the marinade for the chicken wings. However, it must have been really mild as I didn't notice it until he mentioned it and I rather quite enjoyed every bite of it. The star tonight for me would be the red curry dish with fried tofu and rice noodle. The side salad with green onion gave an added aromatic punch to the richness of the creamy curry. My husband's favourite was the grilled pork shoulder. The flavours were rich and bold and balanced perfectly with steamed sticky rice. We have to thank Phil Rosenthal for introducing us to Laotian food.

Thip Khao was a small inconspicuous place from the outside but upon entering it was packed and full of life. Parking was a bit difficult and ended up parking a few blocks away after some circling. There were lots of vegetarian options. I got the Khao Poon and it was so flavorful and the tofu was a nice added crispiness to the otherwise soupy dish! The service was quick and efficient. I would definitely go back to try some more items on the menu!
